Gloucestershire have handed a one-year deal to batsman Will Tavare.

The 23-year-old has impressed for the county's second XI this season and will link up with the first team next March following a winter playing in Melbourne.

Director of cricket John Bracewell said: "Will has been our leading run-scorer in second XI cricket.

"He deserves the opportunity to move up and provide extra competition for our batting places."

Tavare, who has amassed nearly 1,000 runs for the second team, is the nephew of former Kent, Somerset and England batsman, Chris Tavare.

Will added: "I come from a cricketing family and it has always been my ambition to play cricket professionally so I am very excited at the opportunity Gloucestershire are giving me."
