One-Day Cup: Derbyshire thrash Hampshire in opener

Wayne Madsen's 127-ball innings contained 16 fours and one six

Wes Durston and Wayne Madsen set Derbyshire's record third-wicket partnership in one-day cricket during their 136-run victory over Hampshire.

Derbyshire slipped to 20-2 before Durston (134) and Madsen (138) put on a record-breaking 222 in 35.4 overs.

Matt Coles (3-62) was the only bowler to come out with any credit as the hosts posted 340-5 in their 50 overs.

Michael Carberry (55) gave the visitors a solid start, but they were dismissed for 204 as David Wainwright took 4-34.

Derbyshire, who won only once in 14 T20 Blast matches this season and finished bottom of the North Group, dominated the game almost from start to finish.

After a little wobble to start, including the wicket of the returning Scott Elstone for a second-ball duck, Durston and Madsen ripped the Hampshire bowling attack apart.

Durston hit 14 fours and a six in making his career-best one-day score, while Madsen struck one maximum and 16 fours in his maiden one-day ton.

Derbyshire's total was their highest one-day score against a first-class county and, despite the victory, they still have zero points after starting the competition with a two-point penalty for a poor pitch last season.

Derbyshire elite performance director Graeme Welch:

"We had a chat the other day and put a few things in place. We stuck to them for those first 10 overs when we were disappearing.

"It was great batting by Wes and the captain and then we came out and picked wickets up at regular intervals. Our lads played it really well."

Hampshire head coach Dale Benkenstein:

"That was a proper hiding, there were some basic things lacking. Fifty overs is a long stint and, all round, I wasn't very happy.

"With the batting, over the last six to eight weeks we have made some poor decisions."
