Ireland suffer second heavy defeat against Queensland

Ireland's struggles on their tour of Australia and New Zealand continued as they suffered a second heavy defeat by Queensland in Brisbane.

After Tuesday's 230-run hammering on the Gold Coast, the Irish lost by 151 runs at the Redlands Oval as they were dismissed for 138 in 33.2 overs.

James Bazley's 90 helped Queensland reach 289 all out after they had been in a degree of trouble on 110-5.

Craig Young took five wickets and was the top Irish batsman with 37 not out.

The Irish were again under-strength for Thursday's game with skipper William Porterfield, Gary Wilson and Niall O'Brien still not available to play following their recent exertions with their English counties.

In addition, Paul Stirling, Tim Murtagh and Andrew White have all been ruled out of the tour by injury.

Bready paceman Young took three early wickets to reduce Queensland to 30-3 but a fourth-wicket partnership of 79 between Simon Milenko (41) and skipper Jason Floros [30] put the home sides innings back on track.

George Dockrell broke the stand when he trapped Floros lbw, and when Peter Chase [4-52] removed Milenko shortly afterwards, Ireland were back in contention with Queensland on 110-5.

The big moment of the innings came just six runs later when Young dropped Bazley at long-on from the bowling of Dockrell.

Bazley took full advantage of the reprieve to smash 90 from just 58 deliveries which included five sixes.

He was given excellent support from Jack Wildermuth who raced to 52 from just 43 balls.

Young finished with figures of 5-41 but the Queensland total was always likely to prove beyond the tourists.

The Irish reached 14 without loss after three overs but then collapsed to 17-5 as Alister McDermott, son of former Australian Test bowler Craig McDermott, took three early wickets.

Kevin O'Brien was out for a duck as Ireland struggled to 51-7 before Graeme McCarter's 31 and Young's 37 enabled the Irish innings to reach three figures.

Ireland are next in action on Tuesday and Thursday when they play ACT Comets in two matches in Canberra before departing for New Zealand.
