Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell has urged striker Nathan Ellington to move up the pecking order following an injury to Daryl Murphy.

Ellington, 30, was a last-minute addition to the Ipswich bench for Tuesday's win at West Ham.

"It's unfortunate for Daryl but an opportunity for Nathan," Jewell told BBC Radio Suffolk, external.

"Daryl felt his hamstring in the warm-up, Nathan did the last 10 minutes, ran around and caused them some problems."

Ellington has yet to make a league start for Town since joining from Watford in the summer, but finished the 1-0 victory at Upton Park for his first appearance in over a month.

Midfielder Lee Bowyer scored the game's only goal against his former club.

"He didn't celebrate because he wants to live here eventually," Jewell joked.

"But I read in the programme that Mark Noble said he often scores against West Ham, so I was pleased, and really pleased for the supporters who travelled."

The result means Town are undefeated in their last three outings since switching to a diamond formation, and have secured a clean sheet in each game.

That follows a run of just one win in six games.

"We've hit on a system that's suiting us at the moment and the players are playing with confidence," Jewell added.

"It's a funny game football, three or four weeks ago people were saying a lot of things about us. I know we're not getting too carried away but we're making progress."
