Stourbridge relish 'greatest day' after Plymouth win

Hackett led the Glassboys into the FA Cup proper for the first time last year

Stourbridge manager Gary Hackett says the 2-0 win over Plymouth in their FA Cup replay was the greatest moment in the club's 135-year history.

The Glassboys will host Stevenage in their first-ever second round tie.

Long-serving boss Hackett told BBC WM: "It's a great occasion. It's the biggest occasion in the club's history. The lads deserve all the credit.

"We've been here eight and a half years. You work extremely hard and we were rewarded tonight."

Stourbridge dominated the first round replay against 10-man Plymouth and won thanks to second-half goals from Paul McCone and Sean Evans.

Hackett said: "The whole night was amazing. The crowd was top drawer and over the course of 90 minutes we were the better side.

"We have got some very good players and it showed tonight and there was a massive desire to get into the next round.

"I'm so proud of everyone involved and you've got to give tremendous credit to the players. They certainly didn't freeze. At the end, there was only one winner. I can't really remember Plymouth having too many attacks on goal."

But even though the Glassboys looked in control at 1-0 up, Hackett says he was relieved to see Evans double the lead with 17 minutes left.

"It only takes a slip in the box or a mistake," he said. "At 1-0 you're never comfortable and even at 2-0 you err on the side of caution.

"But we looked comfortable and kept the ball very well, especially in the last 20 minutes. They couldn't force our defence into any mistakes."

The Southern Premier side will now host Stevenage in the next tie on 3 December but Hackett has tempered hopes of reaching the third round, where Premier League sides enter the Cup.

"You've got to be realistic with Stevenage," he said. "They're a League One side and doing very well in there. I would imagine we'll be in for a much tougher game."
