Guardiola (right) joined the Barcelona academy at 13. He made his first-team debut in 1990 and went on to make 479 appearances
The Catalan made his senior international debut in 1992 and went on to win 47 caps for Spain, scoring five goals. He was captain as Spain won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics
During his 11 seasons with Barcelona, Guardiola won six league titles, two Copas del Rey (Spanish equivalent of the English FA Cup), four Supercopas de Espana (Spain's version of England's Community Shield), one European Cup, one Uefa Cup Winners' Cup and two Uefa Super Cups
After leaving Barcelona, Guardiola headed to Italy, first joining Brescia (pictured) and then Roma. The Spaniard had a four-month ban after testing positive for nandrolone but he was later cleared of all charges
Guardiola moved to Qatar, after two seasons playing in Serie A, to play for Al-Ahli after turning down offers from a number of European sides
Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced that Guardiola would replace Frank Rijkaard as manager at the start of the 2008-09 season
The 41-year-old Catalan won the Champions League final in his first season in charge at the Nou Camp with victory over Manchester United in 2009
By winning the Champions League, Barcelona became the first Spanish club to win the domestic cup, league and European titles in the same season while Guardiola became the youngest man to coach a Champions League winning team
In 2011, Guardiola reached his second Champions League final in three years and guided his side to victory over Manchester United once more
Victory in the Club World Cup final in December 2011 brought Guardiola's 13th title in 16 tournaments played in charge of Barcelona
Days after Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea on Tuesday night, Guardiola announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season
