Birmingham thrashed Barnet to progress to the second round of the League Cup.

Jon Nurse's header gave the Bees the lead but Marlon King responded from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Clovis Kamdjo.

Birmingham ran riot after the break - Steven Caldwell's shot smashed in off the crossbar and Darren Ambrose's curling effort made it 3-1.

Two injury-time goals from Blues' new-boy Peter Lovenkrands and midfielder Wade Elliott completed the rout.

Clark praises Birmingham reaction

Birmingham City manager Lee Clark told BBC WM:

"We gave Barnet too many opportunities at our goal and they eventually took the lead.

"We had to respond and we did. I think we scored some terrific goals so we'll be looking to improve.

"What was good was the players' reaction. I took stock at half-time, listened to what the players were saying amongst each other. They showed tremendous respect amongst each other but pointed out things they weren't happy with.

"Not only are they good players but they have very high standards and demands, so while we've got that, we will do well."
