Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers 'very honoured' by manager award

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and striker Daniel Sturridge have won the Barclays Manager and Player of the month for August.

The Reds are top of the Premier League after two 1-0 victories in August, and another in September, with Sturridge scoring the winner each time.

The defeats of Stoke, Aston Villa and Manchester United mark Liverpool's best start to a season since 1994-95.

Rodgers wins the award for the second time, while it is Sturridge's first.

Sturridge, 24, is a doubt for Monday's Premier League game at Swansea after injuring his thigh and withdrawing from England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.

Rodgers, 40, takes his team to his former club - Swansea - in their next Premier League fixture on Monday, although he may have to do without Sturridge, 24, who is recovering from the thigh injury that forced him to withdraw from England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.

Liverpool are two points clear of Chelsea, who face Everton on Saturday.

Last season Rodgers guided Liverpool to seventh in the Premier League.
