The 18-year-old was a free agent after leaving Peterborough United by mutual consent last month.
McDonald, who left Posh just seven months after signing a four-year deal, had been on trial with the Minstermen.
"He showed good pace, touch and awareness. I'm pleased to get him on board," York boss Nigel Worthington told the club website., external
"During a conversation with [Peterborough director of football] Barry Fry, Barry recommended this young player to me and told me that he was worth a close look.
"We had him in for a few days in the week prior to Christmas."
York City have not disclosed the length of McDonald's contract.
McDonald, who has had loan spells with Chester FC and Histon, is not eligible for York's game against Morecambe on 1 January.
