Gary Madine: Carlisle United sign Sheffield Wednesday man on loan

Carlisle United have signed striker Gary Madine, who was recently released from jail, on loan from Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season.

Madine, 23, was given an 18-month prison term last October for assaulting two fans in separate incidents.

He played for Carlisle from 2007 to 2011, and trained with the club in September prior to being sentenced.

Carlisle have also signed Stoke City midfielder Lucas Dawson, 20, on a youth loan until the end of the season.

Dawson joined the Potters as a youngster and captained the youth team. He was an unused substitute for the club's Europa League trip to Valencia in February 2012, and has made regular appearances in the development and reserve squads.

Meanwhile, United manager Graham Kavanagh had kept in touch with Madine while the player was in prison and made no secret of the fact he wanted to sign him.

Madine is the second player to move to Carlisle soon after leaving jail this season.

Former Manchester City player Courtney Meppen-Walter moved to Brunton Park last November after serving a 16-month sentence following a road traffic collision which led to two fatalities.

The Cumbrians are currently 21st in League One.
