Coventry City have signed David Prutton on loan from Sheffield Wednesday for the rest of the season.

The vastly-experienced 32-year-old midfielder will be joining his eighth Football League club.

"He has played at the highest domestic level," said Sky Blues manager Steven Pressley.

"He also has a detailed knowledge of this division and its demands. We are delighted to have him on board to help us finish the season on a high note."

Prutton, who won 25 England Under-21 caps, began his career with Nottingham Forest before moving to Southampton for £2.5 million.

He was loaned back to Forest in 2007 and has also had spells with Leeds, Colchester, Swindon and Scunthorpe in a 481-game career.

However, Prutton was involved in controversy when he was given a 10-match ban for pushing referee Alan Wiley and trying to confront the assistant referee when playing for Southampton against Arsenal , externalin February 2005.

After starting the current season as a Wednesday regular under Dave Jones, Prutton has hardly figured for new boss Stuart Gray, making just two substitute appearances for the Owls since mid-September.

With eight games left this season, Coventry are now six points clear of danger following Wednesday night's 1-0 win over Stevenage.

Pressley added: "With the loan departures of Adam Barton and Billy Daniels and John Fleck's two-game suspension it was vitally important that we brought in a player with established quality, leadership skills and experience and David certainly fits that mould."
