Salisbury City co-owner Mark Winter has quit the ailing Conference South club.

Winter completed a takeover of the Wiltshire side alongside Dubai-based businessman Outail Touzar in May.

However, they have been under a transfer embargo since April and after being demoted from Conference Premier for failing to pay debts, they now face expulsion from the league completely.

Winter said in a statement: "I have reluctantly decided to stand down at Salisbury City."

It is understood that Whites supporter Winter has put in £75,000 of his own money to try to save the club while Touzar, who owns a 98% stake, has yet to add any investment.

Moroccan Touzar has since been banned from the club.

They have until Friday, 4 July to clear an outstanding debt and provide a financial bond of £50,000 or face expulsion from the Conference.

Winter added: "As it stands, unless there is radical movement, I expect Salisbury to be expelled from the Conference on 4 July.

"The Revenue and Customs (HMRC) winding up petition which needs to be paid shortly will then call closure on the club as we know it."

Salisbury manager Mikey Harris left the struggling club to take on the role of Portsmouth youth team coach on Wednesday.
