Chris Baird has won 65 caps for Northern Ireland

Defender Chris Baird has signed a one-year deal with West Bromwich Albion.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after leaving Burnley, for whom he made seven appearances during the club's promotion to the Premier League last season.

He becomes Albion's third summer signing, after deals for Craig Gardner and Joleon Lescott.

Head coach Alan Irvine said: "It's important we have the right characters in the dressing room and Chris is certainly that."

The Northern Ireland international's contract includes a performance-related option of a further 12 months.

He had been on a short-term deal with the Clarets after leaving Reading and previously played for Fulham and Southampton.

"He can play in several positions and his versatility effectively makes your squad bigger," added Irvine, who was appointed in June.
