Oxford United have signed of former Scunthorpe United midfielder Michael Collins on a one-year deal.

Collins, 28, was released by Scunthorpe in May after four years, including a spell as captain, and spent part of last season on loan at AFC Wimbledon.

He began his career at Huddersfield and between 2007 and 2008 won six caps for Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

"Something looks to be happening at Oxford and I am excited to be part of it," said Collins.

He becomes new manager Michael Appleton's first signing and the former Blackpool and Blackburn boss believes the midfielder's experience will be vitally important for the U's this season.

"We have a young and small squad and we know we need a few experienced additions," Appleton told the club website.

"Michael has played 300 league games, most of them at a higher level, and will bring a little bit of know-how and quality to the squad."
