Championship side Bournemouth booked their place in the third round of the Capital One Cup with a comfortable win against League Two Northampton Town.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Dan Gosling opened the scoring for the Cherries after 21 minutes and Eddie Howe's side never looked back.

Striker Brett Pitman rounded the keeper nine minutes later and Callum Wilson headed home the third on 79 minutes.

It is the first time Bournemouth have reached the third round since 2004-05.

The Cherries travel to Championship rivals Cardiff in the next round.

Bournemouth assistant manager Jason Tindall:

"It was a very professional job. These games are banana skins but we were in total control for the majority of the match.

"On another day we could have scored more goals but the most important thing is we are in the hat for the next round."

Northampton manager Chris Wilder:

"It was a really difficult night for us, I thought Jordan Archer was outstanding and I'm taking nothing away from Bournemouth.

"Bournemouth were really good and we struggled to hold onto them."
