England Women thrash Montenegro 10-0 in qualifier

England have scored 52 goals, conceding only one and winning all 10 games on the road to Canada

England finished their Women's World Cup qualifying campaign with a 100% record as forward Eni Aluko's hat-trick helped secure an emphatic 10-0 win against Montenegro.

Mark Sampson's team showed the ruthless streak the head coach had asked for to take their goal aggregate to 52-1 in 10 group matches.

Both Karen Carney and Toni Duggan scored twice while Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood and Jo Potter also scored in a totally one-sided contest in Petrovac.

England had already qualified for next year's finals in Canada, but they finished on a high with their biggest win since a record 13-0 drubbing of Hungary in 2005.

"It was a positive, thoroughly professional performance with clinical finishing and it completed a good job well done in qualifying," said Sampson, 31.

"The team has developed really well during the course of the campaign and we should be in a good place when the finals come round next June."

Aluko's hat-trick took her tally to 13 in the group stage and Sampson added: "Eni has taken on board a lot of the things we've been working on with her.

"She's been terrific throughout the campaign and the most important thing is that I think there's more to come from her."

England took control from the outset as Aluko opened the scoring in the eighth minute, latching on to a Lianne Sanderson through-ball to shoot home.

Striker Sanderson was provider again for England's second in the 22nd minute, superbly struck in by playmaker Carney from the edge of the penalty area.

Sanderson again played a part when Sampson's side added a third, her shot rebounding off the crossbar and Aluko was on hand to head in.

Montenegro rarely looked like troubling England, and instead it was the away side who continued to look most likely to score.

They did just that when central defender Bronze tapped in the fourth goal from left-back Greenwood's cross eight minutes before half-time.

Six minutes after the interval Aluko turned provider to set up Carney for her second goal, turned over the line from close range.

Striker Duggan kept the scoreboard ticking over with a neat finish after Aluko's deflected 56th minute shot dropped at her feet.

And eight minutes later Aluko completed her hat-trick, a mazy run taking her past four defenders before scoring from a tight angle.

A second three-goal haul should have been achieved three minutes from time, but Carney missed a penalty after a handling offence saw Irena Bjelica sent off.

But the visitors' advantage was increased in the 90th minute, Greenwood drilling in her first England goal.

And in added time well struck shots by substitute Potter and Duggan took the final scoreline into double figures.

After completing their qualifying campaign with a perfect 10, England can now look forward to the World Cup draw in Ottawa on 6 December.

Before then, though, they are set to play for the first time at the new Wembley in a friendly against two-time world champions Germany on Sunday 23 November.

Sampson said: "We'll look forward to the World Cup draw, but before then there's the Germany game and the players are really excited about that.

"It will be another step on the journey that keeps the side developing and getting us set up for the tournament in Canada."
