The present Celtic goalkeeper and his predecessor could be at opposite ends of Celtic Park when Scotland host England in Tuesday's friendly.
Celtic's Craig Gordon, who had two years out of football through injury, is expected to be given his first Scotland cap for four years.
And Fraser Forster, sold to Southampton this summer, could feature for England.
It follows manager Roy Hodgson's decision to allow number one Joe Hart to return to Manchester City.
The England boss wants to give either Forster or West Brom's Ben Foster a chance to impress in goal against Scotland.
Hart was in goal as England came from behind to defeat Slovenia 3-1 in Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley and go six points clear of their opponents at the top of Group E.
The previous evening, the Scots edged out Republic of Ireland 1-0 at Celtic Park to draw level with the visitors, three points adrift of Group D leaders Poland.
Another former Celtic goalkeeper, David Marshall, wore Scotland's number one jersey for that match.
However, manager Gordon Strachan has told Sunday newspapers that the Cardiff City man is struggling with a "bit of a groin strain".
Strachan has already lost Allan McGregor with a shoulder injury that has left him on the sidelines with Hull City in recent weeks.
If Marshall is ruled out or rested against England, that leaves Strachan with a choice of Gordon and Matt Gilks, who has played once for Burnley since his summer move from Blackpool after being unable to displace Tom Heaton.
Gordon, who earned his 40th cap in November 2010, has been Celtic's first choice this season ahead of Lukasz Zaluska after recovering from a knee injury that threatened his career and left him without a club.
The former Hearts and Sunderland goalkeeper's arrival at Celtic was followed by the sale of Forster to Southampton for £10m.
Impressing immediately at the Premier League club, Forster displaced another former Celtic goalkeeper, Artur Boruc, as number one, the Pole subsequently heading for Bournemouth on loan.
Meanwhile, Scotland will be without Steven Fletcher for Tuesday's friendly, the striker having returned to Sunderland to have a scan on an ankle injury picked up against the Irish.
That could mean a first start for Chris Martin, the striker who has won three caps as a substitute and replaced Fletcher against the Irish.
Martin's Derby County team-mate, Craig Bryson, could be available after the midfielder missed Thursday's match through injury.
West Brom midfielder James Morrison could also have recovered from the illness that forced him to miss Thursday's game, while Rangers playmaker Lewis Macleod should return to the squad after being allowed to play for his club against Alloa Athletic on Saturday.
