Dundee United have appealed against the red card Ryan McGowan received in the Scottish Cup replay defeat by Celtic.

The Australian defender was ordered off for a challenge on Liam Henderson.

His dismissal came minutes after Celtic's Anthony Stokes had been sent off for lashing out at Paul Paton.

United assistant manager Simon Donnelly said post-match: "The reaction of the Celtic players on the back of them just having a red card possibly influences the referee."

The Tannadice side travel against to Celtic Park on Saturday on Scottish Premiership duty.

It is the fourth successive match between the sides, the first being a draw that led to the replay and the other being a victory to Celtic in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.
