Chelsea Ladies boss Emma Hayes has described England striker Fran Kirby as her side's "missing piece".

Kirby, 22, signed for Chelsea, who are top of Women's Super League One, from Reading on Wednesday.

"She been a long term target for Chelsea," Hayes told BBC London 94.9. "Fran, for us, is the missing piece.

"There was a very clear strategic plan to bring Fran to the club because she fits the playing style and she's a local kid."

Kirby scored England's first goal of the Women's World Cup after scoring 11 goals in five league games for Reading earlier this season.

She did not feature for Chelsea on Sunday, as Hayes' side beat Bristol Academy 4-1 to extend their lead at the top of Women's Super League One.

"We'll allow her time to settle in," Hayes added. "There's no pressure for Fran.

"We have enough quality players. We'll give her the opportunity to settle without too much expectation from us.

"We expect her to play anywhere across the front areas and I think Gemma Davison, Eni Aluko and Jo So-Yun will be perfect compliments for her."
