Colchester United 2-1 Charlton Athletic

League One Colchester United impressively defeated Charlton to reach the FA Cup fourth round for the first time in 10 years.

George Moncur gave the U's the lead with a left-footed shot after being played in by Marvin Sordell.

Charlton's Cristian Ceballos hit the post before Sordell doubled Colchester's lead by slotting home after a good move with Moncur.

Reza Ghoochannejhad headed a late consolation for the Addicks

Despite being second from bottom of League One, Colchester were deserved winners against their visitors from the Championship, who have now gone nine games without a win.

Sordell and Moncur had both gone close before the opening goal, which came when the former won the ball in midfield and slipped it through to Moncur, who cut inside from the right of the penalty area before firing into the corner.

Charlton almost equalised when Ceballos' long-range effort struck the woodwork and, soon after, they were further behind as Sordell calmly finished past Nick Pope.

Pope was forced into three fine saves before Igor Vetokele hit the outside of the post midway through the second period as the Addicks tried to find a way back.

Colchester held on until the second minute of stoppage time when Ghoochannejhad finally broke the Essex club's resistance, but it was too little, too late.

Charlton interim head coach Karel Fraeye told BBC Radio London:

Fraeye on Colchester v Charlton

"We were second best in the first half and it was very poor defending for their two goals.

"In the second half we took a lot of risks and tried to score.

"We had some possibilities to score, but the goal was too late for us to come home with the result."
