Cavan set up a Dr McKenna Cup semi-final meeting with Fermanagh after edging out Monaghan in a feisty Section A game at Breffni Park.
Three players were sent off by referee Sean Hurson as Cavan held on after leading 0-12 to 0-5 at half-time.
Monaghan's Drew Wylie and Paul Finlay were red carded with Cavan's Gearoid McKiernan after a 60th-minute row.
Martin Dunne's goal had extended Cavan's lead to 1-12 to 0-7 and they had to battle to hold on.
The impressive McKiernan inspired Cavan to an early 0-6 to 0-0 lead with Dara McVeety and Killian Clarke along among the scorers.
Stephen Gollogly and Dick Clerkin replied for Monaghan but Cavan hit three further points to extend their advantage to seven and that was still the margin at the interval.

Wylie's foul on Martin Reilly ignited the row which ended with the Monaghan defender and Finlay being dismissed along with Cavan's star man McKiernan.
Monaghan's late superiority was increased further by the late dismissal of Niall McDermott after his earlier yellow card was followed by a black card.
The Farney men went close to levelling in injury-time but Paul Meegan's goal effort was bravely blocked by Rory Dunne.
Cavan's victory left them level with Down on four points at the top of Section A but Terry Hyland's side progressed to Wednesday's semi-final meeting with Fermanagh at Breffni Park by dint of a superior scoring average to the Mourne men.
The game will be played at Breffni Park after Cavan won the toss for the venue.
