World Championships: Max Whitlock claims all-around silver

Olympian Max Whitlock equalled the best ever-finish for a British gymnast in a World Championship all-around final with silver in Nanning, China.

It matches the achievement of team-mate Dan Keatings, who finished second at the 2009 Worlds in London.

The 21-year-old led after the opening pommel horse round but Japan's Olympic champion Kohei Uchimura soon took control of the final.

"I can't quite believe the week's ended this way, but I'm so proud," he said.

Whitlock performed a brilliant final floor routine to seal second place. Great Britain's Dan Purvis finished 11th.

Uchimura scored an impressive 91.965 to claim his fifth successive world all-around crown, with Whitlock scoring 90.473. Japan's Yusuke Tanaka (90.449) finished third.

Whitlock initially missed out on a place in the all-around final after a "tough" qualifying round on Friday.

He only learned he would compete on Wednesday after team-mate Nile Wilson withdrew through injury.

"I didn't put any pressure on myself and wasn't looking at any of the other scores as we went around," he added.

"Getting off to a strong start on the pommel horse was great, as I really struggled with that earlier in the week.

"I'd like to say a big shout out to Nile though - it wasn't easy for him to have to pull out. He's a great gymnast and he's going to be so strong and win a lot of medals in the future."
