Scotland head coach Vern Cotter sees potential in side

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter has urged his players to believe they can "mix it with the best" following their third straight Test win.

Duncan Weir's late penalty secured a 21-19 win over Argentina ahead of the Scots' tour-ending trip to face South Africa next weekend.

"We have got good rugby players," Cotter told BBC Scotland.

"Everybody put their hand up and had a go. As soon as we decided to hold the ball and play with it, we looked good."

New Zealander Cotter took charge of Scotland ahead of the 24-6 defeat of USA on 8 June and followed that with a 19-17 victory over Canada last Saturday.

And tries by Stuart Hogg and Henry Pyrgos helped deliver a dramatic win over the Pumas, with the scrum-half crossing to bring the Scots to within a point of their hosts before Weir's decisive kick.

"We had to find the resources at the end to come back from a deficit and get the win," Cotter reflected.

"I'm really pleased that the guys believed that they could come back and produce play that gave us opportunities to score tries.

"It was a very good try that we scored. Even though we missed the conversion, we managed to to have the necessary concentration to get back into a points-scoring situation, which of course Duncan got over.

"Once we just concentrated on getting over the advantage line and moving forward and using the ball, I thought we looked much better.

"We've got South Africa next week. While there were some good things, we must develop them, keep our feet on the ground and we know we're in for a stern Test."

Grant Gilchrist captained Scotland for the first time at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes and the Edinburgh lock praised the "character" of his team-mates.

"To go out there and grab the win away from home down in Argentina, it's a massive achievement," he said.

"As far as the performance goes, it's still not exactly where we want to be.

"Next week's the biggest challenge of the tour and we'll need to be up again another few levels if we want to compete."
