Nick Matthew is the first Briton to win successive World Open titles

Nick Matthew became the first Briton to win successive World Open titles by beating Gregory Gaultier in Rotterdam.

Yorkshire's world number one, 31, came from behind to beat the world number six from France 6-11 11-9 11-6 11-5.

Earlier Nicol David won a record sixth women's World Open title with a straight games victory over England's Jenny Duncalf.

The world number one breezed past Duncalf, the world number two, 11-2 11-5 11-0 in the final.

Matthew was physically resilient, tactically flexible, and mentally strong against Gaultier.

He trailed by a game and 1-3 but painstakingly pulled back the deficit during some fiercely prolonged rallies and some refereeing decisions which upset the Frenchman.

He said: "I stuck in, stuck in, stuck in, and just started to attack a little bit.

"I got a finger in the door, and then my body through, and saw a chink of light and went for it."

In the women's final David took less than half an hour to complete victory in arguably her best performance in a world final.

"It was my best performance, without doubt," she said. "I didn't expect anything. I wanted this so badly but it was a whole different experience out there this time."
