Hat-trick of Great Britain golds

Great Britain's swimmers finished their best ever European Championships top of the medals table with three golds on the final day of racing in Berlin.

Fran Halsall and Jazz Carlin won individual golds in the 50m and 400m freestyle respectively.

The men's 4x100 medley relay team also won their final, and Roberto Pavoni took silver in the 400m individual medley.

That meant Great Britain ended the meet with 24 medals, nine of them gold.

Their previous best European tally was six golds from 18 medals in 2010.

Halsall's superb 50m free swim of 24.32 seconds earned her third gold of the week after victories in the 50m backstroke and 4x100m mixed medley finals.

The 24-year-old subsequently claimed a bronze medal, along with Georgia Davies, Sophie Taylor and Jemma Lowe, in the 4x100m medley.

Meanwhile, there was success for the men's 4x100m quartet of Chris Walker-Hebborn, Adam Peaty, Adam Barrett and Ben Proud.

That triumph came not long after Proud narrowly missed out on a medal in the 50m freestyle, finishing fourth.

Earlier, Carlin had earned her second gold of the Championships in a thrilling women's 400m freestyle.

Carlin, who became the first Welsh woman to win a Commonwealth swimming gold for 40 years in Glasgow last month, held off Sharon Rouwendaal of the Netherlands and Spain's Maria Belmonte-Garcia to take gold in a personal best of four minutes 3.24 seconds.

She had already won gold in the 800m freestyle., external
