Adam Peaty targets further records at World Swim Championships

British swimmer Adam Peaty holds the world records over 50m and 100m breaststroke distances

World record holder Adam Peaty believes he can go "even quicker" at the World Championships in Russia this summer.

Peaty, 20, set the fastest-ever time for 100m breaststroke - of 57.92 secs - at the British Championships last week.

He is part of a 30-strong Great Britain squad, which also features Jazz Carlin, Hannah Miley and Francesca Halsall, who will compete in Kazan from 2-9 August.

"That swim wasn't the fastest I could ever go and I know there's more to come in Kazan," said Peaty.

"I'm only 20 and still quite inexperienced as I've never been to a Worlds or an Olympics, but I can handle the pressure."

Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson is the highest-profile omission, but after a disappointing sixth-place in the 200m breaststroke trials, his non-selection is not a surprise.

Following last year's record-breaking European Championships, British Swimming set a tough selection criteria for the World Championships, with qualification times based within 1-3% of the fastest swims recorded globally during 2014.

Only eight Britons qualified outright, although 16 additional swimmers were selected after recording times within 2% of the selection standard.

Two-time world champion Liam Tancock, who was not taken to the 2013 Barcelona Worlds, is one of six swimmers who missed the second standard to have been handed an additional reprieve by selectors.

"The challenge for everyone is to move our performances on between now and the summer," said British Swimming head coach Bill Furniss.

"Athletes have done a good job to make the team but our primary focus is to improve performances in the summer and we will leave no stone unturned in pursuit of this."
