Andy Murray into Queen's quarters with win over Marinko Matosevic

Andy Murray reached the last eight of the Aegon Championships on his return from injury with back-to-back wins over Nicolas Mahut and Marinko Matosevic.

The Briton completed a rain-interrupted 6-3 7-6 (7-4) victory over Mahut, before easing past Matosevic 6-2 6-2.

He faces Benjamin Becker in Friday's quarter-finals at Queen's Club.

Murray spent 98 minutes completing his win over Mahut, which had been halted because of rain at 6-3 2-2 (15-0) on Wednesday, and defeating Matosevic.

They were the 26-year-old Scot's first wins since a lower back injury forced him to miss the French Open.

Murray, the world number two, needed 42 minutes to complete the job against France's Mahut, who beat him at the same stage of the tournament last year.

He had to fend off three early break points, but recovered from 4-3 down in the tie-break to close it out with a fabulous forehand down the line followed by a ferocious cross-court backhand.

A little over three hours later, Murray was back on a sunnier but windier Centre Court to play world number 65 Matosevic.

The Australian struggled with the blustery conditions, dropping serve in games three and five as Murray took the first set in 25 minutes.

After an immediate break at the start of the second, Murray's only worries were a despairing tumble at the net and letting a service game slip away at 4-1 with a backhand into the net.

He quickly restored the advantage with his fifth break of the match, wrapping up the victory with a love game.

"It was good," Murray told BBC Sport. "This afternoon was tricky, it was extremely windy. I had to be patient and not play high-risk tennis too closely to the lines.

"I have been moving fairly well in the first couple of matches and hopefully that will get better.

"They were two very different matches - the second was more baseline while Mahut played more closely to the net.

"Hopefully the wind calms down a bit tomorrow and we will see more good tennis."

British number five Dan Evans could not cause an upset against Argentine third seed Juan Martin del Potro in the preceding match, losing 6-0 6-3 in 55 minutes.

The 23-year-old from Birmingham, ranked 277, must now turn his attention to the Wimbledon qualifying tournament next week.

"I was playing especially well in Nottingham and before that in the two weeks leading up to it on the grass, so it wasn't an accident that I won matches here and at Nottingham," said Evans.

"I have been working hard and I'm raring to go."

Defending champion Marin Cilic, second seed Tomas Berdych and four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt all reached the last eight, while fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came through two matches.

Jamie Murray and Australian John Peers beat Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 7-5 7-6 (7-2) in round two of the doubles.
