Jazz Carlin wants Great Britain 200m relay place at Worlds

Jazz Carlin is unlikely to compete in the individual 200m freestyle at the World Championships despite winning the British trials in London.

The 24-year-old, who had already won the 400 and 800m, set a new Welsh 200m record of one minute 56.88 seconds.

Carlin beat defending 200m champion Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, with her Bath team-mate touching in 1:57.24.

"I don't think the 200m individual is my event... I just want to be a part of a relay," said Carlin.

"You definitely get a big buzz out of racing a relay, so I would love to be part of the relay."

Carlin will definitely contest her preferred 400m and also probably the 800m at the World Championships, which take place in Kazan, Russia, from 24 July to 9 August.

Carlin won the British 400m title for the third year in succession on Wednesday, with her time of 4:03.51 within the British qualifying mark for the Worlds.

The following day she won the 800m in 8:21.58, a shade below the Worlds standard though Carlin is still likely to compete in the event in Kazan.

"I'm going to do the best I can, put my head down in training and I'm going to be doing everything I can to be at my best in a few months' time," she added.

The unexpected 200m win over O'Connor, with City of Sheffield's Eleanor Faulkner third in 1:58.29, underlined Carlin's good form at the London Aquatics Centre this week.

"It's a bit of a shock. I knew Siobhan was definitely the favourite - her best time is 1:55.82 - but I thought I'd go in there and do the best I could," said Carlin.

"It's so good to get on the podium with Siobhan because we train together day in, day out. It's really nice for us to share that moment... it's great to get one-two for Bath.

"It been an up and down five days and there's been a lot of emotions, but obviously I'm really happy to end it with a best time."

There was further Welsh success on Saturday - the final day of the British trials - when Loughborough University's Thomas Laxton fought off stiff competition to take his first British title in the men's 100m butterfly.

The Carmarthen swimmer posted a new Welsh record of 52.40 to edge out City of Sheffield's Braxston Timm (52.72) and Loughborough University's Adam Barrett (52.74).

"This win means everything to me and to get the Welsh record as well is great," Laxton said.
