Costs could lead to smaller Island Games teams

Channel Islands teams look set to send fewer competitors to the next Island Games because of concern over costs.

Bermuda 2013 organisers have already written to Island Games associations asking for indicative numbers.

Jersey and Guernsey bosses have said their teams will be smaller than normal with individual athletes needing to raise up to £3,000 each to cover costs.

Teams have already launched fundraising drives and set up savings schemes earlier than usual.

Guernsey's footballers have indicated they will not be going to Bermuda.

Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association, Dave Inglis, said: "We're going with a smaller team but we're going with 180, so taking away the footballing contingent we're nearly up to full strength.

"I think there will be a good level of competition especially from Bermuda.

"The reason for the early push is that my logistics people want to secure the best price to get out there."

Guernsey topped the medals table in 2011 in the Isle of Wight with 107 medals.

Steve Jacobs, chairman of the Island Games Association of Jersey, said: "The accommodation in Bermuda is very expensive.

"We've had some costs back from them of £105 a night per person, sharing a room of three people.

"It's slightly better than I thought it would be but we're logistically left with trying to get the team over there."

Jersey took more than 230 sportsmen and women to the Isle of Wight in the summer but Jacobs expects that to be nearer 160 in Bermuda.
