Jersey Sports Council: Linda Andrews gets Sid Guy award

Team Jets coach Linda Andrews has won the Sid Guy Memorial award for her contribution to Jersey netball over more than three decades.

Andrews, who is also Jersey's head coach, was honoured at the annual Jersey Sports Council awards on Friday night.

Past winners have included groundsman Steve Landick, boxing coach Brian Rousseau and shooter Bob Blake.

"It's absolutely amazing," Andrews told BBC Radio Jersey.

Teenager Scott Clayton won the Jersey Sports Person of the Year award

"For me to win, it's just an absolute bonus before the inter-insulars [against Guernsey] this weekend."

Physiotherapist Morag Obarska, who also co-ordinates the island's touch rugby league and manages their tours, won the Colin Welsh trophy for unsung heroes.

From Island Games to the Commonwealth Games, Obarska has travelled the world providing support and encouragement to Jersey sportsmen and women.

Also honoured at the ceremony at the Royal Yacht hotel, St Helier, was rising tennis star Scott Clayton who was named Sports Person of the Year.

The recognition comes after he won the Under-18s British National Tennis Championships in August.

"Unbelievable to win the award" tweeted Clayton, who missed the ceremony because he is training in Portugal.

"Shame I couldn't be there to collect it. Thanks to everyone for choosing me."

Special gymnast Alex Buesnel was also among those celebrating. The Olympic torchbearer was presented with the Jersey Sports Council trophy awarded for achievement in Disability Sport.

On a great night for Jersey netball, the Perpetual Team Trophy went to Team Jets after a year which has seen them pushing for promotion from South West Regional League One at the first time of asking.

Jets are second in the table, one point off first place, with three matches remaining.
