Wales secured qualification for Euro 2016 despite losing 2-0 to Bosnia-Herzegovina - and their former midfielder turned pundit Robbie Savage tweeted: "What a proud night for our small nation Wales, great performance in rugby and qualified for a major tournament."

Swansea defender Daniel Alfei posted: "Unbelievable scenes in Bosnia! Amazing achievement."

Swansea team-mate Wayne Routledge wrote: "Forget the result tonight, incredible achievement for everyone involved with the Welsh FA! France awaits..."

Republic of Ireland of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given tweeted: "Congrats to the Wales team that qualified for #EURO2016 #GreatAchievement."

Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick was at Old Trafford for Saturday's rugby league Super League Grand Final. He was supporting Wigan Warriors, who lost 22-20 to Leeds Rhinos.

Carrick's team-mate Wayne Rooney was rooting for the Rhinos, tweeting: "Great to watch @leedsrhinos win today. Buzzing."

Joey Barton was also at the Grand Final, where he met union players Steffon and Delon Armitage - left out of England's Rugby World Cup squad because they play for clubs in France. Barton tweeted: "Good to see you both tonight, although if you'd been at Twickenham we'd still be in the WC."

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam was watching the other code, rugby union, and hailed Scotland's 36-33 victory over Samoa that put them in the World Cup quarter-finals, writing: "Well done lads today after another win."

Saturday was Non-League Day across England - and Ryman League Premier side Bognor Regis Town - nicknamed the Rocks - marked the occasion with victory over Oxford City in the FA Cup, coming from 2-1 down at half-time to win 4-2 in the third qualifying round. It prompted Bognor striker Ollie Pearce to tweet: "No better feeling than that!"
