Scotland players celebrate following the WXV2 match between United States and Italy

Scotland have won the inaugural edition of Rugby's WXV2 after Italy failed to beat the United States by a sizeable-enough margin.

Scotland beat Japan on Friday with a bonus point to remain in contention to claim the title and had to hope Italy did not defeat their American opponents by 25 points.

And the Italians won 30-8 on Saturday to ensure Bryan Easson's side finished top of the pool by a slender margin.

The Scots recorded three wins from three - the same as Italy - but are ahead on points difference.

Despite their historic win, the Scots will not be rewarded promotion to the WXV1 pool as that was not on offer in this edition.
