Portugal applied most of the pressure in the first half of this Group F qualifier in Lisbon but were unable to make it count.
Cristiano Ronaldo saw a shot cannon off the post with Bernardo Silva sweeping wide with the goal at his mercy, while Jayson Molumby had the Republic of Ireland's best effort with a rasping drive that just cleared the bar.
Portugal increased the pressure in the second half, but Ronaldo saw his penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.
However, as the game enter stoppage time, Ruben Neves popped up with the winner to break Irish hearts.
