Shinty: Kingussie two points from retaining title

Kingussie need just two points from their last four games to retain their Mowi Premiership title after coming back from two down to defeat Caberfeidh 5-2.

Kinlochshiel edged Newtonmore 3-2 at the Eilan and Oban Camanachd cruised past Kyles 4-0 at Mossfield.

Beauly and Fort William secured Premiership promotion with a 3-0 away win over Col Glen and a 5-2 defeat of Inveraray, respectively.

A late strike by Roddy Young won the reserve team title, the HIS Sutherland Cup, for Kingussie, 3-2 against Skye.

First-half goals from Premiership top scorer Craig Morrison gave Cabers a shock 2-0 lead at The Dell. Savio Genini pulled one back right on the break and his second split a double from James Falconer to send Kingussie 4-2 up just nine minutes into the second half. Thomas Borthwick scored Kingussie’s fifth.

A Daniel MacVicar hat-trick following a goal from Andrew MacCuish helped Oban Camanachd make short work of south rivals Kyles.

Newtonmore asserted themselves with two from Iain Robinson, which included a penalty.

Keith MacRae replied for Shiel, Robinson upgraded to a hat-trick and Archie MacRae created a close finish with the Wester Ross side’s second.

Jack MacDonald, Sandy Elrick and Torrin Cairns secured Beauly’s second promotion to the Premiership in three seasons.

Lachie Shaw twice put Fort William ahead but his efforts were countered by Ewan Donnan and Campbell Watt. Ewan Campbell edged Fort ahead yet again, but there was no way back this time for Inveraray after Calum Shepherd got Fort’s fourth and Shaw completed his hat-trick to secure top-flight shinty for the first time since 2015. However, the National Division title remains undecided.

John Archie Tuncay gave Skye a third-minute breakthrough in the Sutherland final. That lead lasted almost until half-time when first-team star Young, eligible for the reserves following inaction with a lengthy injury, equalised. Jordan Murchison put Skye back in front and this lead survived until the latter stages when Michael Slimon equalised again and Young grabbed the winner in the penultimate minute.
