When are medal ceremonies at World Athletics Championships?
- Published
Thousands of athletes have taken part in the 2025 World Athletics Championships, with 147 medals up for grabs - but why don't we see the medal ceremonies after the events?
While winning athletes are quickly handed medals after their race or event has concluded, the podium ceremonies generally don't take place until the following day.
This is when the athletes receive their official engraved medals and the national anthem of the gold medal winner is played.

Where and when do the medal ceremonies take place?

Armand Duplantis broke the men's pole vault world record for the 14th time on his way to winning the gold medal
There is a dedicated 'medal plaza' next to the Japan National Stadium that hosts the ceremonies.
Members of the public are able to attend the ceremonies along with athletes. The majority of the ceremonies do not require a ticket.
They usually take place "prior to the evening sessions on the day following each final" according to British Athletics.
The exception to this will be on the final day of events, when some medallists will have their ceremony the same day as they competed - but still will have to wait until after the championship's closing ceremony.
Should Team GB win any medals, the BBC will broadcast the ceremonies in the World Athletics Championships evening highlights show on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
Why do the ceremonies take place later?
Organisers say the format gives more athletics fans the chance to be part of the events.
The ticketless system means that spectators who missed out or could not pay for event tickets have the chance to see their favourite athletes be presented with their medals.
Some athletes have also used the ceremonies as a chance to meet fans and sign autographs afterwards, such as US gold medal-winning shot putter Ryan Crouser.
