Ian Cathro has been appointed head coach of Portuguese side Estoril, his first managerial role since his seven-month spell at Hearts seven years ago.

The 37-year-old Scot was most recently employed by Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia as a first-team coach, before leaving last year.

Prior to that, he worked under current Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur.

Cathro was also assistant to Nuno at Rio Ave between 2012 and 2014, giving him experience in Portugal's top flight.

The highly-rated coach had a tough time at Tynecastle, winning just seven of his 30 games in charge.

Cathro succeeds Vasco Seabra, who left after only nine months in charge and having led Estoril to their first cup final in 80 years, losing to Braga after a penalty shoot-out in the Taca da Liga, League Cup.

However, Seabra agreed a contract termination after being linked with the South Korea head coach job and Estoril finishing 13th of 18 sides in the Primeira Liga.
