Cork edge Donegal in thriller as Dublin breeze past Cavan

Two goals in as many minutes at the start of the second half helped Cork to upset Donegal and clinch a 3-9 to 0-16 win in a dramatic All-Ireland SFC group game at a sunny Páirc Uí Rinn.

It handed Jim McGuinness’ side their first defeat of the season in either league or championship.

Cork led by five points with 20 minutes to go following those goals, but Donegal chipped away and drew level late on.

However, Steven Sherlock and Colm O’Callaghan pointed in stoppage time to earn Cork the win.

In Saturday's other All-Ireland Series games, Mayo held on to win despite a late Roscommon rally, while Dublin simply had far too much for Cavan at Breffni Park

Cork first found the net on 19 minutes when they turned over their visitors and there were no defenders separating Matty Taylor and Donegal goalkeeper Shaun Patton.

Taylor carried the ball 80 metres and finished emphatically, firing past Patton to give the Rebel County the lead.

Chris Óg Jones added to his side’s advantage to give Cork a three-point advantage, but Donegal finished the first half the stronger of the sides, outscoring their opponents 0-6 to 0-1 with scores via Ciaran Moore (two), Paddy McBrearty (two), Niall O’Donnell and Oisin Gallen, to lead by two points at the short whistle.

That lead quickly evaporated as Sean Powter and Rory Maguire fired in two goals in quick succession to stun Donegal in the opening minutes of the second half.

Cork’s lead grew to five points, but veterans McBrearty – who finished with 0-7 on his 150th inter-county appearance – and Ryan McHugh steadied the ship, before scores from Gallen, Caolan McGonagle and Aaron Doherty had the game level at the death.

However, it was to be Cork’s day, and they composed themselves and grabbed the all-important points through Sherlock and O’Callaghan to hold on for a dramatic win.

There was no mercy shown by Dublin at Breffni Park as they romped to a 5-17 to 0-13 win over Cavan to take command of Group 2 in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.

Dessie Farrell's side were eight clear at the break and there was no slacking in the second period as they added a further three goals, the first of them through Killian McGinnis just 24 seconds after the restart, and Cavan found themselves outclassed by the defending champions.

Oisin Brady did show well for the Ulstermen, kicking eight of his team's points, but they just had no answer to Dublin who were in full control after the early exchanges.

The visitors had eight different scorers with Brian Howard picking up the man-of-the-match award, yet there were a host of contenders with Cormac Costello finishing with 2-5 between play and placed balls, while Paddy Small, who also found the net, and Brian Fenton starred.

The options off the bench were solid too as Colm Basqual chipped in with three points and Jack McCaffrey was exceptional in defence and also going forward, highlighting the strength-in-depth available for the Dubs.

They will now face Mayo in their final game with top spot in Group Two up for grabs, while Cavan face Roscommon in a winner-takes-all game to remain in the championship.
