Lewis Ferguson credits a "Scottish mentality" for helping him recover so quickly from his serious knee injury as he prepares for a likely return to action on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Bologna captain suffered an anterior cruciate ligament in April that ruled him out of contention for a spot in Scotland's squad at Euro 2024 this summer.

But the former Aberdeen midfielder has been named in his club's matchday squad for the first time since his surgery as his side prepare to visit Cagliari in Serie A.

Ferguson told club media, external: "I just want to return as strong as possible. I want to have the same feelings that I had last season when I played.

"This is just the nature of a Scottish player - we have the desire and the will to win. This is just the Scottish mentality.

"You work hard and fight every day to become better."

Injury has prevented Ferguson playing a part in Bologna's Champions League campaign, including 2-0 defeats away to Liverpool and Aston Villa, after they finished a creditable fifth in Serie A last season.

His return is timely given Vincenzo Italiano's side have gone five games without a win and currently sit 12th in Italy's top flight.
