Liverpool made a pre-tax loss of £9m in the 2022-23 season as their increased commercial income failed to offset a drop in money made through media and matchday revenues.

The 12 months prior to this period saw the club produce £7.5m in profit.

Last season, Liverpool made £272m worth of off-field income, which was an increase of £25m on the 2021-22 season. However, their Champions League last-16 exit, which came a year after reaching the Champions League final, meant the club lost about £19m in television money.

Matchday revenue also fell by £7m because the Reds played fewer games.

Managing director Andy Hughes believes matchday revenue, which is "a hugely important part of Liverpool's overall financial sustainability model", should increase this season. The new Anfield Road stand was fully opened earlier this month, taking Anfield's overall capacity to 61,000.

While overall revenue did remain the same at £594m, other costs - including wages - have increased.

During this reporting period, Liverpool signed the likes of Darwin Nunez, though did offload Sadio Mane, Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino and Neco Williams.

There were also significant contract renewals for Mohamed Salah, Joe Gomez, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak.

"Despite the significant growing costs of football, the success of our commercial operations demonstrates the strength of our underlying financial position, so we can continue to operate sustainably while competing at the highest levels of football," added Hughes.
