Why do clubs alternate Champions League matchdays?
- Published
In one word: broadcasters.
Uefa sell broadcasting packages across the world. Rotating games between Tuesday and Wednesday allows countries who share the broadcasting rights to show clubs an equal number of times.
A team in the Champions League will play four games on a Tuesday and four on a Wednesday in the league phase.
During the knockouts, first and second legs will alternate between Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Therefore, when there is just a week between fixtures, one set of teams will play Tuesday and then the following Wednesday.
The rest would play Wednesday and then the following Tuesday, meaning all teams throughout the tournament will play an equal number of games on both days.
The final is always played on a Saturday evening, and has been since it was changed from Wednesday evenings starting with the 2010 final.
