Norfolk's Sophie McKinna has become the first ever British female to win a global medal in shot-put.

The 16-year-old, from Great Yarmouth, threw a distance of 14.90m to claim silver in the World Youth Championships in Lille on Wednesday.

She was beaten to the top spot by China's Tianqian Guo, whose 15.24m effort was enough for gold.

McKinna's second-place finish in France has so far been Great Britain's only medal at the competition.

McKinna came fifth at last year's Youth Olympics and in May this year broke the British under-18 record with a throw of 15.71m.

The Geoff Capes-trained athlete also claimed bronze in her senior bow at the UK Indoor Trials and Championships earlier this year.
