Diamond League will attract youngsters - Louise Hazel

Louise Hazel believes the success of the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham on Sunday will attract more British youngsters to the sport.

Hazel, the reigning Commonwealth heptathlon champion, competed in the 100m hurdles at the Alexander Stadium.

"It's bringing sport home as far as I'm concerned," she told BBC WM.

"It's going to be a real legacy, not only for British athletes or for Birmingham athletes, but also for all those aspiring youngsters out there."

It was the first time that Birmingham had hosted a Diamond League event and it was well received by competitors and organisers.

Hazel, who competes for the Birchfield Harriers, reserved special praise for the atmosphere created by the sell-out crowd on her home track.

"When they mentioned all the British girls in the line-up, the place just went wild," said the 25-year-old, who came seventh in her heat with a time of 13.34 seconds.

"I'm a bit disappointed with the time, but the race was awesome. It was all over before we all had a chance to breathe.

"I'm pleased with the way I ran and I didn't get a great start so I know there's definitely more in the can."

The Alexander Stadium will stage the British trials at the end of July, with places at the World Championships in Daegu at stake.
