Jodie Williams beats UK junior record in Europeans

Williams is now the European and world junior 100m champion

Teenage Great Britain sprinter Jodie Williams set a new UK Junior 100m record at the European Junior Championships in Estonia.

The 17-year-old schoolgirl and world junior champion secured the gold medal in a personal best time of 11.18 seconds, also a championship record.

"I performed on the day and I'm over the moon," Williams said.

"My times in training have been better than last year [2010] so I knew I had 11.1s in me."

The Hertfordshire runner added on social networking site Twitter: "Couldn't have asked for anything more, so happy. Thank you everyone for your support."

Other British athletes have used Twitter to congratulate Williams on her feat.

Beijing Olympic sprinter Jeanette Kwakye tweeted: "Well done!! True Champ!," while GB 400m hurdler Perri Shakes-Drayton wrote: "Well done [Jodie Williams] and good job."

Dutch sprinter Jamile Samuels trailed in second place in 11.43 while Tatjana Lofamakanda Pinto of Germany came in third (11.48).

Fellow Briton Marilyn Nwawulor finished eighth in 11.73.

Meanwhile, on a succesful day for British athletes, Adam Gemili, 17, took the silver medal in the men's 100m (10.41) and David Bolarinwa earned bronze (10.46).

Gremili, 17, who also plays football for League One side Dagenham & Redbridge's Academy, reflected: "I'm really happy to continue with both football and athletics and I'm really, really happy with that race today.

"Watch out for us now in the relay, we've got a great team."

Williams is back in action in the 200m and 4 x 100m events on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
