Lee Merrien targets Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Guernsey's Olympic marathon runner Lee Merrien is setting his sights on the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Merrien says he is only likely to run one marathon in the autumn of this year as he recovers from a hip injury.

The 33-year-old says his main focus is being fit to represent his home island at a fourth Commonwealth Games.

"Representing Guernsey again would be a huge honour and to potentially achieve something even better is right up there among my main list of targets."

Merrien finished 30th in the London Olympics marathon last summer, having competed on the track for Guernsey at the last three Commonwealth Games, and believes he is still improving over the distance.

"I don't feel I've achieved the times that I'm capable of," he told BBC Guernsey.

"I simply want to run a faster time over the marathon.

"I still want to run sub-2.12, which is what would have guaranteed my selection for London.

"That's my target time over the next couple of years and that's the sort of times where potentially, if you run well at a championship, you could pick up medals at the Commonwealth Games."
