Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford beat London silver medallist Mitchell Watt to win the IAAF Melbourne World Challenge.

Rutherford managed 8.10m in the fourth round to finish ahead of the Australian's 8.01m.

"An 8.10m isn't anything massively special," said the 26-year-old Briton.

"But we are in the early part of the year and waking up this morning I didn't expect to be able to jump that well so early."

Rutherford, from Milton Keynes, jumped 8.31m at last year's London Games to relegate favourite Watt to silver with 8.16m.

"Every competitor always wants to win," added Rutherford. "Mitch is a friend of mine.

"Ultimately he wants to beat me and I want to beat him but we are always still mates."
