Mo Farah beaten over 5,000m in Eugene Diamond League meeting

Double Olympic champion Mo Farah was beaten over 5,000m in his first Diamond League race of the season in Oregon.

The 30-year-old finished second in Eugene behind Kenyan Edwin Soi, who won in a time of 13 minutes 4.75 seconds.

Farah opted to run in the 5,000m instead of the 10,000m after suffering from a stomach virus.

Christine Ohuruogu finished fourth in the 400m, Perri Shakes-Drayton came sixth in the 400m hurdles, while Greg Rutherford was third in the long jump.

Farah's recent dominance of distance running began with a silver medal in the 10,000m and gold in the 5,000m at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, before he took gold over both distances at last year's London Olympics.

But he was uncharacteristically outsprinted by Soi over the final 200m on Saturday in the United States, later tweeting: "I will be back for sure!"

Farah's British team-mate Chris Thompson finished in 20th.

Olympic champion Rutherford, 26, managed 8.22m with his final jump on Friday, but was short of Russian Aleksandr Menkov's personal best of 8.39m. Brazilian Mauro Vinicius Da Silva finished second.

Rutherford tweeted: "Missed opportunity to jump really big. Not happy but a great comp! Just getting started."

Beijing Olympic gold medallist Ohuruogu, 29, produced a solid run to finish fourth in the 400m, clocking 51.31 seconds, as Botswana's Amantle Montsho followed up last week's New York success with another comfortable victory in 50.01 seconds.

Shakes-Drayton, 24, who missed out on the Olympic final last year, was never in contention in the 400m hurdles but at least had the consolation of beating Olympic champion Natalya Antyukh of Russia.

Czech Zuzana Hejnova finished more than two seconds ahead of Shakes-Drayton to win in the fastest time recorded this year of 53.70 seconds.

British duo Laura Weightman and Hannah England finished 11th and eighth respectively in the 1500m, with the race won by Kenyan Hellen Obiri in three minutes 58.59 seconds, while Marilyn Okoro finished sixth in the 800m.

Great Britain's Andrew Osagie finished the 800m in fifth, behind winner Mohammed Aman from Ethiopia.

Robbie Grabarz finished sixth with a season-best 2.26m in the high jump, Yamile Aldama came eighth in the triple jump and Steve Lewis finished sixth in the pole vault.

Former Olympic champion Justin Gatlin won the 100m in 9.88 seconds, while other winners included two-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.71), of Jamaica, in the 100m, and reigning 10,000m Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba (14:42.01), of Ethiopia, in the 5,000m.

Another former Olympic champion, America's LaShawn Merritt, won the 400m, ahead of Grenada's London 2012 gold medallist and world champion Kirani James.

Kenenisa Bekele won the 10,000m in 27 minutes 12 seconds.

With August's World Championships in Moscow on the horizon, the Diamond League meetings in Birmingham on 30 June and London on 26-27 July are expected to draw many of the sport's biggest names.
