Michael McKillop given late invite to London Anniversary Games

Michael McKillop has been handed a late invite to this month's London Anniversary Games.

A double gold medallist from the London Paralympics, McKillop's T37 middle distance events were not on the original schedule.

However, following adjustments to the day of Paralympic competition on 28 July, he now features in an 800m race.

Fellow Northern Irishman Jason Smyth's T13 sprint events are still not on the Games schedule.

In April, Smyth expressed his frustration at his omission from the Anniversary Games but the organisers defended the decision, insisting that they had to be "selective" about the events chosen for the day of Paralympic competition.

The Paralympic component of the Anniversary Games will follow two days of athletics competition featuring stars of last year's London Olympics, including Jamaica's 100m and 200m champion Usain Bolt.

McKillop revealed his invite to the London meeting on Twitter on Friday.

"I have just got an invite to compete at the London Anniversary Games. Back to the Olympic Stadium I go," said the 23-year-old.

McKillop is expected to compete in a cross-category race at the London meeting.

The Glengormley man, who won his first Paralympic gold in Beijing in 2008, showed good form at the International Paralympic Committee's Grand Prix final meeting in Birmingham last month as he cruised to an 800m win.

Both McKillop and Smyth will be expected to win gold medals at the Paralympic World Championships in Lyon which start on 19 July.
