Jersey's Zane Duquemin targets 2015 World Championships

Jersey athlete Zane Duquemin is already targeting 2015 as a huge year for his career.

The shot-putter and discus thrower did not make the squad for the current World Championships in Moscow but is plotting selection for Great Britain in two years time in Beijing.

"By then I plan to be at the standard where I'll be selected," he told BBC Radio Jersey.

"Obviously moving towards Rio in 2016, that's the next big aim."

Duquemin, 21, narrowly missed out on the London Olympics but earlier this season represented GB at senior level for the first time at the European Team Championships.

He has already qualified for next summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in both his disciplines.

But 2015 could be even bigger for him, with the prospect of an appearance in Beijing and with Jersey hosting the Island Games.

"I think the Island Games is really important," he added. "With it being Jersey it'll be the first time I've ever thrown in front of a home crowd.

"It's run like a really big competition so it gives people the experience to go on and do bigger and better things."

Duquemin holds the Island Games record in both shot putt and discus.
