Eilidh Child delighted by Scottish Athlete of the Year award

Eilidh Child says being named Scotland's Athlete of the Year is "a nice icing on the cake".

The 26-year-old won bronze in the 4x400m at the World Championships and took silver in the 400m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

And Child has confirmed she will compete at the Glasgow British Athletics International Match at the Emirates Arena in January.

"The whole season's gone really, really well," Child told BBC Scotland.

Child was part of the winning 4x400m relay team at the European Athletics Indoor Championships and also won the 400m hurdles at the European Team Championships.

January's event will be part of her preparation for next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"As athletes and as sports people, you always tend to put a lot of pressure on yourself anyway," she explained.

"Any race I go into, I want to win it and Glasgow won't be any different. So, there's that little bit of pressure but it's no more than what I would put on myself."

Child, who is from Perth, relocated to Bath to focus on athletics full-time and believes that decision is paying dividends.

"It's made a huge difference being full-time because I don't think people realise that you don't just need time to go and train, everything you do needs to be geared towards your athletics," she added.

"It's having the free time to recover after sessions and for me that's been a huge deal."
