Diamond League: Mo Farah & Lynsey Sharp win in Birmingham

Mo Farah set a new British two-mile record with an emphatic victory at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham.

In his first British track race of the year, the 31-year-old finished in eight minutes 7.85 seconds, to eclipse Steve Ovett's 8:13 which was set in 1978.

Lynsey Sharp, who won Commonwealth and European silver this month, sealed an impressive victory in the 800m.

She clocked 1:59.14 to beat world and Commonwealth champion Eunice Jepkoech Sum of Kenya.

Farah, who missed the Commonwealth Games through illness, ran the second mile in four minutes flat and said: "It was a bit windy, so I wasn't sure early on but I felt good."

Olympic triple jump champion Christian Taylor won the long jump with a final-round leap of 8.09 metres, with Britain's Greg Rutherford (8.04m) fourth.

Commonwealth champion Kemar Bailey-Cole of Jamaica claimed the 100m, surging through to win in 10.08 into a headwind and with thunder rolling in the distance.

Lynsey Sharp produced a strong finish to win the 800m in fine style

Compatriot Nesta Carter was second in 10.13, with Britain's Chijindu Ujah fourth in 10.23 and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey sixth in 10.34.

Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha won the 600m in 1:13.71.

The Kenyan finished just outside the fastest time in the event of 1:12.81 set by American Johnny Gray in 1986.

"I thought maybe I would get closer to the world record but it wasn't a bad performance," Rudisha told BBC Sport.

Olympic champion Kirani James produced a strong finish to win the men's 400m in 44.59.

Briton Martyn Rooney was third in 45.25 and Matthew Hudson-Smith seventh in 46.60.

Commonwealth champion Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica took the women's 400m hurdles in 53.80, with Britain's Eilidh Child second in 54.89.

Nickel Ashmeade, the Commonwealth 100m bronze medallist, held off Alonso Edward to win the men's 200m in 20.33.

The Panamanian was second in 20.35, with Commonwealth champion Rasheed Dwyer third and Briton James Ellington sixth in 20.93.

The women's 100m was won in 11.22 by Jamaican Kerron Stewart. Britain's Asha Philip was third in 11.26 and Ashleigh Nelson, in the outside lane, fourth in 11.27.

There was an unusual finish to the men's 3,000m steeplechase as winner Jairus Kipchoge Birech of Kenya, who also triumphed in Rome and Oslo this season, stalled at the final fence and had to put his hand on the hurdle to vault over, before finishing in 8:07.80.

Commonwealth 5,000m champion Mercy Cherono won the women's two-mile in 9:11.49 seconds, beating her own Diamond League record set earlier this year.

In the women's 100m hurdles, Olympic champion Sally Pearson (12.85) could only finish third.

The 2008 Olympic champion Dawn Harper-Nelson won in 12.66, with Britain's Tiffany Porter fourth.
